Dr. George Kontopoulos was born in Jersey City, New Jersey (USA) in 1974. He graduated from the Medical School of Athens in 1999 with honors “Cum Laude”. After passing the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE), he went on to do a preliminary year in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey and General Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center at the State University of New York (SUNY). Between 2002 to 2006, he completed his residency in Ob/Gyn at Maimonides Medical Center at SUNY – the hospital with largest number of deliveries in New York State. During his residency training there, he was awarded the Berlex Award for “Best Teaching Resident of the Year” and was chosen as a representative of the Ob/Gyn Residents of District II of ACOG, along with one resident from each of the 12 districts to participate in the debate of the 57th JSOG meeting in Kyoto, Japan.
Dr. Kontopoulos passed all of the written and oral exams of American Board of Ob/Gyn and has been maintaining his board certification status in the USA ever since then. He also received a Certificate of Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery in Statzburg (IRCAD), France in 2011 and is a Fellow of the American College of OB/GYN (FACOG) since 2012.
In 2007, he returned to Greece, where he served in the military. Shortly after that, he began working at IASO, – the largest maternity hospital in Greece. He has been helping couples to achieve a pregnancy as a Fertility Specialist at the Assisted Reproduction unit of IASO Maternity Hospital for the past 10 years.
He is a founding member of the “Institute of Life”, an Assisted Reproduction Center in Athens that is one of the most innovative and state-of-the-art units in Europe. In addition, Dr. Kontopoulos is a member of American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), Greek American Medical College (GAMC), American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), and a few more. His special interest is in the field of Fertility and Minimally Invasive Surgery. He still holds an active New York State Medical License as well as a Greek Medical License.
Dr. Kontopoulos brings his medical knowledge into our classroom as one of our instructors in ACEAM’s Western Medical Health Sciences Track. He will teach modules on Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology of the Reproductive System.
